The bill would allow the import of 41 polar bears currently stranded in Canada! Although the affected hunters complied with all applicable laws and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recognized conservation benefit from these hunts, the hunters have been unable to import their bears for more than 15 years due to a technicality created by the Endangered Species Act and Marine Mammal Protection Act.

SCI has led efforts to redress this error for years, including supporting a prior version of this bill sponsored by the late Congressman Don Young, another prominent SCI member. In April, SCI Litigation Associate Madie Demaske testified before a Congressional subcommittee in support of this bill. And SCI members reinforced this advocacy during SCI's annual Lobby Day on May 7.

SCI’s membership has been heard! SCI thanks the House Natural Resources Committee members and applauds the leadership of Rep. Nick Begich. We are encouraged that this important legislation has now advanced out of committee and is one step closer to consideration by the full House.
